Walking with My Dog at Joganji River Park — A Vast Riverside Park with Views of the Tateyama Mountains

Joganji River Park is located in Tateyama Town, yet it is only about a 10-minute drive from central Toyama City, just across the Joganji River. The park is especially well known for its spectacular winter scenery: on clear days, the snow-covered peak of Mt. Tsurugi and the surrounding Tateyama range rise dramatically against the sky, creating one of the most impressive mountain views in the area.
The park stretches for roughly 2 kilometers along the river embankment and covers about 27.9 hectares — approximately the size of six Tokyo Domes. Nearly two-thirds of the entire area is maintained as open lawn. With soccer fields, a baseball ground, large playground equipment for children, and wide open walking paths, it functions as a large multi-purpose recreational park where visitors of all ages can spend time comfortably.
Thanks to its vast grassy spaces and long, flat walking routes, the park is also a popular destination for people walking their dogs. No matter the season, the area becomes lively in the late afternoon with local residents enjoying relaxed walks with their pets. The good visibility and spacious layout make it an ideal place for safe and pleasant dog walking. Another convenient feature is the large free parking area, which makes access very easy.
Until last week Toyama experienced heavy snowfall, and some snow still remained when I visited the park with my dog. Although the air was cold, the gentle winter sunlight felt warm, and the crisp atmosphere made the walk especially refreshing. Climbing up to the embankment, we were rewarded with a clear view of Mt. Tsurugi before sunset, sharply outlined in the transparent winter air. Looking toward the opposite side, the cityscape of Toyama spreads out beyond the river, allowing you to enjoy both the mountain scenery and urban view from a single location.
Many people were jogging, strolling, or playing sports in the park, each enjoying the space in their own way. Because the park is so large, it rarely feels crowded, which adds to its relaxing atmosphere.
While the park feels quiet in winter, spring transforms the riverside into a beautiful corridor of cherry blossoms, welcoming visitors with soft pink scenery. It is a place where the landscape changes with every season — and one where I always look forward to returning for another peaceful walk with my dog.
